After a few years of experience in data science, I’ve decided to take on some game design as a personal project and a new challenge. As an educator, I see many of my students struggling to maintain their motivation while learning the basics of programming. I’m hoping to bring elements of game engineering into my class to help my students see coding as a fun experience.

Defender of Zyrth! is very feature light right now, but has all of the core elements that I planned for it. It was intended to be a learning experience for me, as much as it was intended to be a complete game. Most of my recent coding experience has been using Python for machine learning, so Defender of Zyrth! was written in Python using the Pygame library. None the less, I think it’s a fun game to play during my office hours.

I am not planning to add any features to Defender of Zyrth! now, but I am willing to listen to community feedback. If enough people as for a new weapon or enemy type, then I can make that happen. But the simplicity of the game is one of it’s appeals for me, so I’d rather leave it how it is and focus on making my next game more feature rich.

I have not shared the source code of for DoZ on Itch.io but it is in a public GitHub under it’s original working title. Please feel free to contact me if you would like access to the repository. But fair warning, this code was written as a hobby project and the comments are pretty lacking.
